Friday, October 16, 2020 -- Taste of Romance, Savanna, IL

Join us for the day as we discover an enchanted place filled with dreams, love and art.  Along the mighty Mississippi, lies the small town of Savanna, IL.  Here we will find one of the most unexpected homes known as Havencrest Castle. Originally built in 1872, Mr. & Mrs. Alan St. George became the 7th owners of this estate in 1976. Pouring over every detail, together they transported each room to long-forgotten eras without the aid of an architect or designer. Our self-guided tour will feature Alan St. George’s sculptures, paintings, and murals inspired by the love of his life, his wife, Mrs. Adrianne Blue Wakefield-St George. This private sanctuary of love and art offers a world of romantic dreams where reality and illusion merge and fantasies come true.

Next, we will enjoy lunch at Pool 13 Restaurant. Following lunch we will explore the Savanna Museum & Cultural Center conveniently located across the street.  After 50 volunteers came together in 2010 to renovate this location, it received the Illinois Governor’s Hometown Award.  This updated center features a Wayne King Room which showcases the life’s work of this local son in professional music heard on broadcasts from CBS and WGN radio and NBC radio and television, Gene Wright’s Gallery of Civil War Soldiers featuring his life’s work in an impressive life-size display, and a room-sized model railroad display. Feel free to enjoy a 5 minute walk to the end of Main Street to see the  fully restored railroad car, the Savannah Central which used to hub through the area.

We complete our visit to Savanna with another hidden gem as we travel to the Land of Oz Dolls. This location was founded in 1979 by Connie Zink after she signed up for a   local porcelain doll class.  This class introduced her to her life’s work of porcelain doll-making. She reproduces quality antique reproduction and modern porcelain dolls by hand for customers all over the world. With the growth of her business, she now showcases some of these dolls in a dedicated building for travelers from near and far to see.
