MENDOTA AREA DEPARTURES


FRIDAY, APRIL 12--CONFIRMED TRIP--THE IRISH LAUNDRY LADY & THE SCOTTISH MAFIA--BYOK (bring your own Kleenex) as you laugh until you cry while the Irish laundry lady gives you the scoop on the mob, murders, and little known tales of the notorious Shelton gang from Peoria's pre-prohibition era. Then get ready to laugh some more at Conklin's Barn II when 2 cops, 3 crooks, 8 doors and the Scottish mafia set the stage for hilarity in "Unnecessary Farce." THURSDAY, MAY 22--CONFIRMED TRIP--CIRCUS, CATS, AND CABINS--Smile all the while you marvel at the brightly colored circus wagons and take in a show at Circus World Museum in Baraboo, Wisconsin, including lunch in an authentic log cabin. Visit the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue Center and hear the story related to saving these magnificent animals.


WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6--CONFIRMED TRIP--MAKE IT MADISON--Escape to 16 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and a tropical indoor conservatory at Olbrich Botanical Gardens. For a summer treat take a narrated luncheon cruise on Lake Mendota in Wisconsin, of course.


JUNE 20–28--CONFIRMED TRIP--PACIFIC COAST JOURNEY--9 days from Portland to San Francisco. Experience the International Rose Test Gardens, the Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon Dunes with a 4-wheel-drive dune buggy ride, Crater Lake National Park, jetboat excursion on the Rogue River, gigantic sequoias and redwoods, Napa Valley, and a San Francisco Bay Cruise plus much more. FRIDAY, JULY 12--CONFIRMED DATE--WHAT'S IN YOUR BACKYARD?--A summer BBQ cookout party? YES! Come and party with your VISTA Club friends beginning with a mule-pulled canal boat ride on the Illinois-Michigan Canal, an old fashioned cookout at Starved Rock Lodge, and a tour with a Summer Sunset Concert on the lawn at the Hegeler-Carus Mansion. Bring your lawn chairs and let's party!


AUGUST 12–17--APPROXIMATE DATES--GREEN BAY & DOOR COUNTY--Board the Tall Ships for a tour or cruise on the river at the Tall Ships Festival in Green Bay, Wisconsin. We hope to tour Lambeau Field, too. Door County beckons with its lighthouses, maritime stories, art galleries, eclectic shops and picturesque lake views. Exact tour details are pending.


WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21--CONFIRMED DATE--GOLD PYRAMIDS & TEMPELS--Lake County, Illinois holds many treasures. A Gold Pyramid house surrounded by a moat, an enormous statue of Ramses II, a 3 pyramid garage, and King Tut's tomb will be included in the amazing tour of this private property. Close by is Tempel Farm the home of the famous Lipizzaner stallions. The horses perform a program which is set to classical music following the various stages of their development and training. You won't want to miss these spectacular Lipizzaner horses prance, march, perform stylized jumps and "airs above the ground."


WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11--CONFIRMED DATE--"SOUTHERN CROSSROADS" & ISABEL BLOOM PRODUCTION STUDIO--Enjoy a toe tappin', knee slappin' good time southern jamboree featuring 17 different instruments at the Circa 21 Dinner Playhouse matinee lunch and musical production of "Southern Crossroads." Visit the Isabel Bloom Production Studio in Davenport, IA for a short video, fascinating tour of the unique concrete casting and finishing process, and shop for an interesting handcrafted sculpture to take home.


SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12--CONFIRMED DATE--THE IRON HORSE & THE RACE HORSE--Enjoy the 40th Annual Historic Pullman House Tour. Leisurely tour 6 or 7 landmark homes from the Pullman train car historic era. The house tour includes 120 year old homes which range from executive mansions to 14-feet wide worker's cottages to multi-unit apartments. You can also visit the Greenstone Church and factory buildings of the Pullman community. Then "we're off" to nearby Balmoral Park for a deluxe buffet and an evening of live harness racing.


SUNDAY, DECEMBER 8--CONFIRMED DATE--"A CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE MUSICAL"--Travel to Munster, Indiana for a memorable start to your holiday season. The Charles Dickens' classic story gets a new twist with a full Broadway treatment. You'll love this musical tale of Ebenezer Scrooge's chance for redemption. This gala performance is accompanied by a fabulous Sunday champagne brunch!


DECEMBER 30--JANUARY 3, 2014--CONFIRMED DATE--125th ANNIVERSARY ROSE BOWL PARADE--A chance to see this world famous parade up close and in person. Enjoy premium seating for the 125th Anniversary Tournament of Roses Parade featuring precision marching bands, equestrian teams, and beautiful flowers from around the globe on the colorful floats. Feast at the exclusive tailgate party. Inspect your favorite entries at the "Showcase of the Floats." Attend a gala New Year's Eve party with dinner, dancing, and a toast to the New Year. Tour fascinating Los Angeles which includes a visit to the legendary Grauman's Chinese Theater and more. Watch your mail for more information, soon.


GIRLS' DAY OUT--DATE PENDING--OVERNIGHT AT THE OSTHOFF--Bring your Mom, Sister, Best Friend, Aunt, Grandma, Daughter, Niece, or Cousin. Have a ball with the "sisterhood" while we wine, dine, shop, and play at the incomparable Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. We plan to overnight at the Osthoff and have FUN, FUN, FUN!



BLOOMINGTON AREA DEPARTURES

MARCH 16TH, 2013 - St. Patrick's Day Murder Mystery at Mackinaw Valley Vineyard - We will start with an exclusive wine tasting class and tour for Vista Club Members and their guests at 4:30pm. The dinner event starts at 5:45. TEa and coffee are provided during meal and dessert service. The wine bar will remain open throughout the evening for purchase. (Watch for the green wine!)


APRIL 3RD, 2013 - MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL AT THE BLOOMINGTON CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS - Vista Club will host a private reception with Hors D' oeuvres and drinks starting at 6:30 pm for members and their guests. Show begins at 7:30. Members and guests are welcome to enjoy additional refreshments during intermission. (A minimum of 35 people are needed to reserve the private reception room).


SATURDAY, APRIL 27TH – 'BACK IN TIME', ALTON, IL ($72/P) - The location of Alton near the three great rivers of the Midwest thrust the city into the forefront of the great issues of the early nineteenth century. First stop is the Mississippi Mud Pottery Place where we will see artists in action as we see the mud spun into unique gifts. (Gift shop open.) We will take a break to stop for lunch. Following lunch, we will travel along The Legacy Trail Tour. Period costume guides will share stories of famous figures like Elijah Parish Love Joy, Simeon Ryder Mary Todd Lincoln, and Abraham Lincoln. Plus, we will visit famous locations like the National Cemetery and the Lincoln/Douglas debate sites. After the tour we will enjoy a sweet treat from Just My Desserts. We will finish the day with a guided tour of the Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower. While stopping at all 3 levels, we will see the convergence of the 3 great rivers and learn how these important waterways influenced and led to the development and prosperity of the local communities.


WEDNESDAY, MAY 1ST – BREAKFAST WITH THE CLUB, NORMAL, IL (FREE) -During the continental breakfast time, we are offering a presentation called "5 Things Every Retiree Should Know" which is information specifically designed to assist with planning for years to come. Along with this short seminar, we are providing entertainment featuring one of our very own internationally acclaimed Vista Club members 'The Normal Storyteller'. We will finish our time together with an overview of upcoming Vista Club trips and a give-a-way (must be present to win). Come meet other Vista Club members and bring a friend. Must register to attend. See you there!


SATURDAY, MAY 18TH – BOTANICAL GARDENS CHINESE FESTIVAL, ST. LOUIS, MO ($69/P) - Join Vista Club as we travel to St. Louis to experience the Chinese Cultural Festival. We will arrive in time to see the opening parade and ceremonies. The festival offers more than just gardens. They provide various cultural demonstrations, a food court, a separate vendor area, tea tasting, music, and guided tours of the garden offered throughout the day. A schedule of events will be provided so you can plan your day around what you prefer to see and do. Visit the different areas or participate in the guided tours when you desire. Lunch is on your own. We will depart at 4:00 allowing time to enjoy a delicious sit down dinner in Springfield (included in the price).


FRIDAY, JUNE 7TH – ST. LOUIS ZOO AND INTERACTIVE SCIENCE CENTER, ST. LOUIS, MO ($52/P) - Want a planned day for the kids/grandkids after school gets out? We have it for you. We will depart at 7:00 am for St. Louis (with planned activities to keep them busy on the way down and back). We will spend a couple hours at the zoo. Your fee includes your tour of everything except special activities. We will depart for the Science Center at noon where we will enjoy boxed lunches. After lunch, the kids can explore the over 700 hands-on activities featured throughout the 13 galleries. There is something for everyone at any age. (I have been told from a Grandma that grandparents can feel comfortable relaxing while kids explore various areas on their own). Again, no additional fees are necessary unless you wish to enjoy the special attractions. After a couple of hours or exploration, we will depart. Next stop is to pick up a quick treat to enjoy while we drive towards home. A short break is planned around the Springfield area before we arrive back in Bloomington.


FRIDAY, JULY 19TH (TENTATIVE DATE) – LADIES DAY OUT, 'A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS' - We are finalizing details for this day and will post them as soon as we can confirm the entire agenda for that day.


SATURDAY, AUGUST 10TH – SUNDAY, AUGUST 11TH – WEEKEND GET-A-WAY, CHICAGO, IL - Come with us for a quick get a way before the summer ends. Some of the activities we will enjoy include a tour of the Historic Pullman District, A architectural tour along the Chicago River, the Smith Stained Glass Museum, time to enjoy Michigan Ave., and some additional exciting activities. Some of the activities we have planned for Sunday have not provided group pricing. This information is supposed to be made available at the end of February. We plan to post details of this trip once everything has been confirmed. Don't forget to check back for the updates.


THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH – 'WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE WE?', WADSWORTH, IL -Travel north with us as we experience cultures found abroad. First stop is at Tempel Farms where we will experience a little taste of Europe with the Lipizzan breed or horses which represents over 400 years of select breeding. Rain or shine doesn't matter during our visit because we will be indoors enjoy a guided, behind-the-scenes tour of this magnificent breed. We will learn how these European horses played a part in history from the Renaissance era to World War 1 & 2, survived near extinction, and came to North America. We will also watch a demonstration on how they train these horses in the art of European style ride and show, which takes almost 5 years for horse to master. (http://www.tempelfarms.com/tempelfarmheritage.html). We will enjoy a nice sit down lunch (which will be included in the fee) and then off to Onan's Gold Pyramid House. Enjoy a little slice of Egypt right in Illinois. We will enjoy a guided tour by Mr. Onan himself of the residence he and his wife call home. Built in the shape of an Egyptian Pyramid, we will get to tour the first two floors of the house, hear a presentation on the history of this house, and see a replica of King Tut's Tomb.


FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11TH – TASTE OF WISCONSIN, MONROE, WI ($73/P) - We will travel north of the border where we will start at the Alp & Dell Cheese Factory and Shop. This beloved owner, known for his entertaining tours, will take us on a guided tour of the factory where we will finish with some taste testing and opportunity to shop at the gift shop. Next, we will depart for Turner Hall. This Swiss Hall is believed to be the last active one in the United States. We will enjoy a tour, a sit down meal, along with some Swiss entertainment. We will then drive to the Minhas Brewery, the 2nd oldest Brewery in the nation, where we will enjoy a guided tour. While we are there, you can tour the various rooms of displays which feature various related artifacts from the mid 1800s until the 1960s. When we get ready to leave, you will receive a 'Thank-You' gift. You can choose from a 4-pack of some of their finest crafted brews or a 4-pack of their famous Blumer's Soda.
