Mendota Area Departures

THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 2016 -- "NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT" at Theatre At the Center, Munster, IN

It's silly, it's funny, it's a full Broadway singing and dancing spectacle that you will love! Set in the Roaring 20's, you have a cast of outrageous characters in Long Island, gathered for a wedding. Of course, nothing goes as planned once wealthy playboy, Jimmy Winter, meets Billie Bendix, female bootlegger. 400 cases of gin that need a place to hide during prohibition, a Duke, a Duchess, a police chief, a Senator, Chorus Girls, and the Vice Squad make this a wacky, uproarious tribute to musical comedy. Nice Work If You Can Get It has a host of recognizable George & Ira Gershwin songs including "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off" and "'S Wonderful." There's plenty of dancing and lots of humor in this screwball comedy to charm you!

Before the show a delicious lunch will be served including a Tossed Salad, followed by your choice of a Shrimp Skewer with Garlic Butter or Grilled Chicken Breast with Pesto Cream Sauce, plus Rice Pilaf and Green Beans, and Chocolate Fudge Cake for dessert. The Theatre building also boasts the lovely South Shore Arts Gift Shop and William J. Bachman Art Gallery to peruse prior to the show. And there will be a "sweet" surprise stop on the way home!!!

We're off on a trip around the world although we never leave Illinois! How can that happen? Come along with Vista Club on this exciting 2-day adventure to find out! We think you will be delighted with each of the stops!

Day 1:

 We begin the day with a return to the Annual Jewelry, Fashion & Accessories Show at the Donald E. Stephens Convention center in Rosemont. If you haven't been there before, you will be amazed at the variety of jewelry, scarves, clothing, home décor, beauty products, fine jewelry and so much more that you will find. It's a great time to think about those Christmas stocking stuffers! We're calling this our China experience!

 Next, we have a quick lunch stop at the very popular Sweet Tomatoes restaurant for their delicious and unlimited selection and variety of salads, vegetables, soups, breads, beverages, and even dessert and soft-serve ice cream. You will think you are in the Tuscany region of Italy with the décor, and you cannot possibly go away hungry!

 We think you will love our next stop at Galena Cellars Winery in Geneva. Unwind and relax with a nice tasting of eight different wines, many of which are produced at their vineyard in Galena, IL. Weather permitting, we may even be able to sit on their lovely patio to enjoy the Fall day in the U.S.A. (And just dream that you are in France or Italy!)

 Then we head south to Aurora to check into our rooms but today's fun isn't finished yet! We are staying overnight at the Holiday Inn Express, which is close to many downtown venues. We will take just a few minutes to check into our rooms and drop our bags, and then we are off for some evening fun.

 Our next stop is at Ballydoyle's Irish Pub & Restaurant for a pre-selected buffet of famous Irish entrees including Shepherd's Pie, Harp Battered Fish & Chips, Chicken Pot Pie, with homemade cinnamon sugared donuts. I'm sure you can purchase a Guinness beer or Jameson whiskey to go along with your meal.

 Next we are off to a Greek island to enjoy the music and performance of Mamma Mia at the Paramount Theatre. This classic stage performance features toe-tapping ABBA music such as "Dancing Queen," "SOS," "Take a Chance," and many more. You will love the zany escapades amid wedding preparations that go slightly awry!

 Then it is back to the hotel and the remainder of the evening is yours to enjoy. (The Hollywood Casino is about 4 blocks from the hotel, if anyone is interested.)

 Breakfast Snacks, Lunch and Dinner included on this day.

Day 2:

 Be sure to take advantage of breakfast at the hotel before we depart for a quick ride to the Morton Arboretum. The Fall colors should be outstanding as we enjoy a delightful narrated open air tram ride through 13 miles of trails amid internationally-renowned plant collections. (If weather does not permit the open tram, we will utilize our coach with the narrator on board.)

 Next we have a unique venue which might be surprising to you! We will be arriving at the Hollywood Boulevard Cinema, Bar & Eatery where they have multiple "themed" viewing rooms. Each auditorium is color-coded (gold, purple, black, red, green, blue, rainbow, etc.) and represents various movie settings (the Red room features Chinese productions; the Black room includes Egyptian movie sets, etc.) There will be time to tour the various rooms prior to our seating for a lunch with lots of your favorites that you will enjoy while watching a comedy especially selected for Vista Club!

 Then we are off to Germany! We have a private performance and behind-the-scenes tour of the "Opera In Focus." This is not a typical opera … it consists of hand-made German puppets who will present full staged scenes from, in our case: Halloween Spooktakular, Godunov, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Phantom of the Opera. The puppets are manipulated from under the stage floor and are capable of very lifelike action and dramatic gestures for which opera singers are famous.

 Time for some goodies! We have a stop planned at the Central Continental Bakery/Upper Crust Cafe which has been in operation since 1922, founded by Polish immigrants Teofil & Marie Czerniak. Among their specialties are Polish paczkis, kringles, cakes, donuts, and so many more mouth-watering treats! There will be time to grab a cup of coffee and enjoy a sweet or bring some home for later.

 Start practicing your hula so you will be in the mood for a Polynesian adventure! We have reservations at The Tiki Terrace where you will enjoy the beautiful island décor while choosing your entrée from seafood, chicken or pork specialties. You may also want to try some traditional taro chip appetizers with pineapple salsa or eggrolls Bora Bora. And save room for some of their famous desserts such as Haupia coconut cake or the Chinaman's hat. You can purchase a Hawaiian beverage such as a Mai Tai, Mango Colada, Waikiki Beachcomber, and lots more. Then sit back and enjoy the performance of the action-packed Echoes of Polynesia revue show which will have you swaying in the tropical breezes.

 Unfortunately, we have to return home after the show, but you will have sooooo many fun memories and new friends from our 2016 Around the World Fun!

 Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included today.

Cost: $298 for double room, $363 for single room, $281 for triple, $271 for quad.

Fee includes: All tours, tickets for performances, meals as listed above, transportation, taxes and tips. Any cancellations will be refunded if we can fill your vacancy.

We begin our day at the new Bright Farms hydroponic facility scheduled to begin production on June 30. This 4-acre greenhouse has five pools for growing a variety of greens including leaf lettuces, spinach, herbs, and a dedicated area for growing tomatoes. This is definitely not like any "farm" you have ever seen and seems more like something out of science fiction. Watch the bees in action as they do their pollination duties. If you have never seen a hydroponic farm, you are in for an amazing lesson!

Following our "farm" visit we will be treated to a delicious lunch at the Flight Deck located at Tom Koritz Field in Rochelle, which is also the home of Chicago Land Sky Diving Center. Lots of goodies are on the menu, and then we will be captivated by a presentation about sky diving.

After our busy morning and delicious lunch, we will travel back in time to visit the amazing Roberts WW II Armory. This world class museum specializes in the acquisition and display of armored vehicles, artillery and many other artifacts used by the U.S. in World War II. During WW II reenactments, the museum usually portrays the 70th Tank Battalion. The purpose of this museum is to preserve the history of World War II and to honor those who served. If you like history, you will love this place! Check out the website at, and see the huge array of items. This Armory is a well-kept secret and only open to the public a few days of the year! Our Veterans will be honored here for their service to our country with a few surprises! You will be excited to see the old and the new -- Call today!
