Fox Valley Area Departures

THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 2015 -- HIDDEN GEMS OF HISTORY & HORTICULTURE, Northern Chicago, IL

Last Fall I visited two "must see" destinations in the Northern area of Chicago--The Chicago Botanic Gardens and the Holocaust Museum. Since words cannot describe the experience, the best thing to do is join the Vista Club to experience what these two locations have to offer. We will start the day at the Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, IL. This world class museum designed by a world-renowned architect is dedicated to preserving the memories of

those lost in the Holocaust and teaching current generations about the need to fight hatred, indifference and genocide in today's world. There is much to see and take in and the tour should last for about 1 hour. There is also a gift shop on site.

After the visit to the museum, our next stop will be at the Cheesecake Factory in Skokie. If you can't find something to tempt you at this eatery, you aren't hungry! Lunch will be on our own, so who's to say you can't start with dessert first!

Our final stop of the day will be at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. There are 385 acres with 26 different gardens to wander and explore--one of the most spectacular gardens in the nation. The specialty areas include the Japanese Garden, the English Walled Garden, the Waterfall Garden, and the Science Center with a green roof garden. There are tram tickets available to purchase for those who would like to sit and view the gardens instead of walking through them. We will

have 2 hours to look, touch, sense and smell the gardens, with time to spare to visit the gift shop to find those one-of-a-kind gifts! My goal is to have you enjoy the day inspired by the education and beauty of what you have been exposed to, and to leave with a better understanding of events that happened years ago.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 15, 2015 -- "GUYS ON ICE" -- Fireside Theatre, Fort Atkinson, WI

You've seen them. Little wooden shanties sitting on lake ice. Puffs of smoke rising from chimney pipes. On a quiet day, maybe the static of a tinny radio filters through plywood walls, across the frozen tundra, back to shore. In a cold world, on a cold day, on a frozen lake, these little signs of life are all most people know of a secret culture that thrives right here amongst us. Well ... wonder no more as we bring you Fred Alley's wildly popular tale of the secret world of ice fishermen. GUYS ON ICE spends a day in the life of Marvin and Lloyd - fishing buddies and home grown philosophers. And now this Wisconsin favorite gets the full Fireside treatment that will keep you laughing from start to finish. Don't miss this side-splitting musical comedy, guaranteed to thaw out your funny bone with songs like "The Wishing Hole," "Ode to the Snowmobile Suit," "Fish is a Miracle Food," and "The One That Got Away."

Of course, we will also enjoy the wonderful matinee lunch provided at the Fireside prior to the show. Today's menu includes: Boneless short rib of beef, Chicken Waterford, whipped baked acorn squash, fresh green string beans, Marvin & Lloyd salad, and topped off with traditional strawberry shortcake! Coffee, tea and milk included. Plus there will be ample time to browse through the spectacular gift shops, purchase bakery items, or relax in the lounge.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, 2015 -- DIVE RIGHT IN! Rochelle & Sycamore, IL

Is skydiving on your bucket list? Have you thought about it but decided it was too risky? This is the next best way to have the experience without the fear! "Dive" right in with First State Bank Vista Club when we travel to the Flight Deck Bar & Grill located next to the Chicago Skydiving Center in Rochelle, IL. Sit down and enjoy a leisurely lunch on your own and try some of their signature dishes like "Fly-By Spinach Salad," Filet Sliders, or any of their mouth-watering sandwiches, accompanied by their signature chips! While we eat, we will be scanning the sky for the skydivers. You will be able to see them as they emerge as tiny dots in the blue sky and parachute down … sometimes landing on their feet or landing on their bottoms! There will also be an opportunity to tour the facility and watch as they fold up the parachutes, train the jumpers, tune the planes, and much more.

NOTE: Skydiving observation is dependent on weather and wind conditions.

Next on the agenda we will "descend" on the Roberts Armory, also in Rochelle. This is a museum that holds a personal collection of memorabilia from World War II. It has it all--tanks, jeeps, landing craft, uniforms, authentic family photographs from Germany--really, just bursting at the seams with items all related to the war that just marked it's 70th anniversary. Finally, we will "land" at Prairie State Winery in downtown Sycamore for a bit of wine tasting. We will have a chance to taste 7 of their award winning wines, shop for some unique gifts, and be able to relax after an exhilarating day of diving, descending and landing! Bottoms up!
